KDS DAR School is pleased to announce Avery Martin and Abram Stewart as its 2025 Continental Congress Representatives. Following a thorough selection process, Avery and Abram, KDS juniors, were chosen to represent the school during the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution’s 134th annual Continental Congress in Washington, D.C., this June.
All junior students were invited to apply for this honor. Applicants’ names were passed on to a nominating committee, resulting in eight finalists who were interviewed by a panel comprised of members of the KDS Executive Committee, Administrative Staff, High School staff, and other DAR members.
Avery Martin is the 16-year-old daughter of Daniel (KDS Class of 1996) and Marla Kirkland Martin (Class of 1992). She has attended KDS since kindergarten. While taking dual enrollment courses at Northeast State Community College and Advanced Placement courses at KDS DAR High School, Avery holds a GPA of 97.45 and is ranked 12th academically in her junior class. Her favorite subject in school is science as she has enjoyed learning how cells function as well as the Periodic Table. Her future plans are to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville where she will major in accounting with plans to become a Certified Public Accountant.
Avery is a very active young woman, participating in and holding leadership positions in extra-curricular activities such as KDS Student Government Association, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Leo Club. She is also a member of the DAR varsity cheerleading and track teams. Avery is a member of Grant First Baptist Church where she serves on the kitchen team and participates in missionary fundraisers. She also is a member of the Gunter Mountain Society, C.A.R. In her free time, Avery enjoys spending time with family and friends, swimming, exercising, watching movies, listening to music, and cooking.
As a fourth-generation student at KDS, Avery’s life at KDS is punctuated with patriotism as well as education. She states, “The positive things to me at KDS would have to be the quality of education, the encouragement of teachers to always do our best, the beautiful campus, and of course the sunsets!”
KDS junior Abram Stewart is the 16-year-old son of Wesley (KDS Class of 1991) and Erica Sutphin Stewart (Class of 2000). Abram has attended KDS since kindergarten. He is an Advanced Placement student and is dual-enrolled at Northeast State Community College. He is ranked 19th academically in his junior class with a cumulative GPA of 95.97. The class he enjoys most this year is AP Language taught by Miranda McCoy. He states, “My favorite parts of her classes are the open discussions we have and how she allows each student to give their opinion to build off one another’s ideas to come up with a conclusion.” After graduation Abram plans to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville to study civil engineering.
Abram is a member of the Leo Club, Snead State Youth Leadership Development Program, the Gunter Mountain Society, C.A.R., and he plays on the DAR varsity basketball team. He attends Broad Street Church of Christ where he participates in the Lads to Leaders program and takes part in many service activities. Abram’s hobbies include playing guitar, listening to music and collecting vinyl records. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, sightseeing, camping and being outdoors.
Sharing his thoughts on what makes KDS a special place, Abram said, “To me, attending KDS DAR School means being a part of a tradition that started when my third great grandfather, Will Dan Sutphin, carried rocks up Gunter Mountain to help build the first structure on the KDS campus and has continued as four generations of his descendants have received educations, with several going on to study education and returning to KDS for their teaching career.”
